Variety Children’s Comedy Benefit

Variety Childrens Comedy Benefit by orange photography Sometimes we get so busy that we forget to blog about fun events that we get to cover.  One of those was the Variety Children’s Comedy Benefit that headlined Zach Galifianakis.  It happened during the always fun SF Sketchfest, and was help at The Punchline’s in support of Variety’s Therapeutic Scholarship Program.  The program proving scholarships to deserving disabled children to receive specialized care and to achieve greatness through their Mobility Program (providing specialized adaptive bikes, wheelchairs, and medical equipment for children suffering from degenerative illnesses), the Compassion Fund (providing gas cards, hotel stays and groceries to families traveling far distances to visit their hospitalized children), and the Outreach for At-Risk Youth Program (providing assistance to after-school and community youth programs).

On hand were many luminaries including San Francisco 49ers great quarterback Joe Montana as well as Renel Brooks-Moon, the Giants Announcer and KISS FM Radio Host, Fiona Ma, former SF Supervisor and California Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore,  Mike Sugerman of CBS 5 and KCBS Radio Reporter and comedian Wavy Gravy.

ISES-NCC Education program: The Psychology of Events by Kevin White

ISES NCC Education program: The Psychology of Events by Kevin White by orange photography

Photographing events gives us a pretty broad exposure into the world of how events are run and how people respond to them.  However, on Tuesday March 19th, Kevin White, CSEP, and Chief Strategist at XPL presented on the psychology of events.  This was an interesting topic since it went much deeper into how to make events with maximum impact.

The keys can down to something that all photographers are familiar with – you have to know how to tell a story!

To do that, White says that you have to:

  • Delve into the mind
  • Control the mood
  • Design communication
  • Satisfy human needs, and
  • Incorporate the senses

Sporting events are the perfect example of very emotional events, but if you miss any of the ‘needs’ of your audience you can lose them (think of overly long bathroom lines killing the joy, etc.).  However, most successful events fulfill all attendees needs from the physical to societal (belonging).

White also stressed that needs trump wants.  This is pretty obvious when you think about it but it’s sometimes overlooked. (more…)

Milton Glaser, IDEO, the d:school and design in everything!

Milton Glaser, IDEO, the d:school and design in everything! by orange photography

One of the trends that we’re happy to see is the integration of design not just into graphics and marketing but as a general philosophy. We’ve shot things at IDEO and with the d:school at Stanford and this whole design world view seems to be gaining more and more momentum.  I recently watched Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight and found his insights to be inspiring.

A common refrain here in San Francisco with tech companies and others relates to failure.  As David Kelley of IDEO says: “At IDEO, we believe that enlightened trial and error beats the planning of flawless intellects.  In other words, we fail faster to succeed sooner.  The reason is simple: the best solutions to most problems are rarely the most obvious.”

Similarly Glaser says: “Fail more often in order to find out what you’re capable of learning.”

This week we also got to hear Terry Winograd speak at Stanford about what the d:school has been up to and are now scheduling a tour to see how they approach things.

But design thinking isn’t just about failure.  It’s more a perspective on the world and something we’re trying to embrace more not only with our photography studio and agency, but also at the level of how we interact with each other and our clients.  Check out the video below to see the 60 Minutes segment on Kelley which is pretty insightful:

Orange does the Anchor Brewery Tour

Orange does the Anchor Brewery Tour by orange photography

Most beer lovers recognize Anchor Steam as the quintessential and/or original S.F. beer brand. But not everyone knows they can book a a tour (up to two months advance notice often required)  to see the brewery and learn how their world-class beer is made. Anchor has also been one of my favorite clients over the past few years (we’ve photographed everything from their holiday party/Christmas Ale releases to their brewmaster portraits) and we took a few hours last Tuesday to surprise Natalie (Orange Crush Production Lead/Staff Photographer) on her birthday with a fun afternoon trip. I am a big fan of Anchor’s role in San Francisco’s history and consider the brewery my ‘hometown beer.’ We enjoyed tasting nine of the currently available Anchor brews and picked up a number of fun factoids to impress our friends. I was introduced to Anchor California Lager® for the first time on the tour, and my life will never be the same again.

The new Speakeasy Tap Room!

The new Speakeasy Tap Room! by orange photography You may have heard that Speakeasy has a new taproom designed by Kelly Malone and we finally checked it out during a fundraiser for her.  The place is gorgeous and we set up a photobooth for the benefit too and because of the design it was a cinch to make it look amazing since the design and interior is so sweet.  The gangster speakeasy style comes through from the reclaimed wood and lots of warm lighting and nice touches like photos from gangsters and prohibition behind wooden palettes that decorate the walls to using bomber bottles as light shades.  Here’s a few shots from that evening and if you’d like to read more here’s a story on EaterSF by Allie Pape about the tap room.

break from running for a self portrait on camera phone

Part of my new year’s resolution was to run a marathon this year and I am excited to share with everyone that I am participating in the Big Sur marathon this April. To help me stay motivate and do something positive while training for the marathon, I am raising money for Children with Cancer charity, which help me secure a slot to run in this very popular marathon that was sold out in less than 30 hours! It’s supposedly one of the most beautiful courses to run a marathon and I hope i have the energy to enjoy the scenary while i m running my first marathon!

2013 MPINCC Annual Conference and Expo

2013 MPINCC Annual Conference and Expo by orange photography

What’s the best part about event and hospitality conventions? Going home with all the freebies? Well, aside from that, it’s a chance to get great personal interaction and insight from the kinds of companies that you cross paths with every day. It also provides a rare opportunity, as so much is done virtually these days, to put everyone and everything into perspective. Visiting an exhibit booth for a rustic luxury hotel in Denver then looking to your left and seeing a giant AT&T Park sign kind of helps us dream about all the possibilities in this industry.

As photography sponsors of the MPINCC Annual Conference & Expo 2013, we were able to capture more than the average conference-goer snapping from morning til’ night. We also gave attendees the chance to come and get a free (and instant!) professional headshot on-site with our headshot studio booth. The iPad kiosk is always a hit and easy to use for everyone, instantly emailing your selecting image.

Keep your eye out for our photos of the day that include the CEO of Virgin America teaching everyone a lesson or two, event planners by the dozen, and extravagant booth designs by professionals from all around the country. Oh, and we hope you enjoy your headshots! Check out the full gallery here!

San Francisco Beer Week is almost over :(

San Francisco Beer Week is almost over :( by orange photography In case you hadn’t noticed that the city might be a bit more tipsy than usual, that’s because it’s San Francisco Beer Week!

We covered the Opening Night gala on Friday which has grown tremendously over the years and during the week there are a ridiculous number of events going on. There’s probably a lot of “working from home” or calling in sick (which I guess could be legit, theoretically) this week but it’s all worthwhile.  Some would say that craft brewing got it’s start here, and Anchor Steam (one of our clients) is a pioneer in the industry and continues to put out great beer.  In Northern California we’re fortunate to have an abundance of great options so if you are looking to learn more about beer, go check out an event!

You can see all our photos from San Francisco Beer Week in this photo gallery (most pix are from the Opening event but a few more sprinkled throughout the week).

7th San Francisco Green Business Awards Reception

7th San Francisco Green Business Awards Reception by orange photography

We were super excited to attend and shoot this event since we were getting our new plaque for our renewal as a San Francisco Green Business.  We’re very proud to have been the first photography studio to earn this designation, which is one of the most stringent ones around, since being green has been a big part of our business philosophy since the start.  Paired with our Social Photography program, it’s a core value of Orange Photography.

This year we took candids and the step and repeat shots (all posted online here) and had a great time mingling with our fellow Green Businesses.

Anna Frankel, Green Business Coordinator for the San Francisco Department of the Environment, who hosted the event said: “The 7th San Francisco Green Business Awards Reception was a great success as we honored 54 recognized Green Businesses, one of them being Orange Photography!  Each year the event continues to show that our Green Business community is strong and growing, showcasing leaders in San Francisco.”

It’s great to see more and more businesses going green and we look forward to being a part of this for years to come!

San Francisco Beer Week Opening Celebration #sfbeerweek

San Francisco Beer Week Opening Celebration #sfbeerweek by orange photography

If you aren’t already at the DIPA Fest then you might be remembering all the great beers from last night’s opening celebration for San Francisco Beer Week!

Like many, we first had to grab a taste of Pliny the Younger.  Always a hugely popular brew, I felt kind of sorry for the Russian River folks with such a huge line right from the start.  But there were plenty of great beers available and really too many to try.  Luckily there was plenty of food options like Belly Burger, Rosamunde sausages, and an amazing chicken and waffle sandwich from Soul Groove.  Tunes were provided by Noise Pop and you couldn’t walk more than ten steps without being within reach of a pour of beer.

One of the new beers (for me) that really stood out was Ale Industries’ Unity, as in Edward and I also liked Mill Valley Beerworks’ Ned.  Ned is a Flanders Red, so it’s a sour, which is one of my favorite styles of beer and the Unity is also a sour.  Of course Pliny the Younger is fantastic and the Drakes Hopocalypse Black Label might have pushed me over the edge.  Overall a great kickoff to a great week.

We’ll be at Sour Sunday tomorrow at Triple Rock and all over town all week so say hello if you can and maybe we’ll take a Polaroid of you as part of another project we’re doing all week…

We’ve posted all our shots to our Facebook page here.
