Holidays already?

Guinness Well as it always seems in the US, the holidays are upon us earlier and earlier. We've sent out our holiday promotional emails to our customers and they seem to be a hit.

We also found the perfect gift for the studio so if anyone wants to get this for us, we'll throw in a free studio portrait shoot for this Guinness Kegerator (as well as free Guinness of course!).

official orange baby

IMG_7209.jpg

it wasn't by design but i couldn't resist crowning a friend's baby as our official orange baby calendar year. it's always amazing to photograph a baby's progression within the first year. This one is beginning to have some character.

The first shoot of the morning...

Amy Schmid with some help from James Cook of FTV
The suite we're staying in at the Hyatt Regency here in Atlanta, GA has a nice window that I decided to leverage for my first shoot in the morning which started at 5:00am PT. This was taken by Hans Klein who was sitting in on the shoot while James Cook was assisting. Personally I ended up liking this making of shot more than the actual photo.

Birthday Boy

20051117_IMG_4873.jpg

Thursday, 11.17.05, was old man Jack's birthday. To celebrate, we busted out a chocolate cake that was so rich and decadent you can only have one slice. Happy Birthday Jack!!!

alaya model 2

kristina_416_5D.jpg

Since we all have to begin somewhere, it was interesting working with less experience models. given my tendency towards a photojournalist approach, it was quite different to constantly direct or confirm the model's expression. regardless, there is still that decisive moment that i see when i am working in this formal context.

Behind The IT Scene

colo_servers.jpg

Ever wonder about the hardware & IT infrastructure behind our website? Well here is a picture of our servers that power our operation on the web. I was at our co-location facility this morning dealing with a troublesome server and decided to give you a sneak peak with this picture. Oooohhh.... look at all the pretty lights!!!

alaya fashion model 1

z_293_5D.jpg

I am finally beginning to take advantage of our studio space with some test work with a new fashion designer, alaya. Her website isn't up yet but it should be an interesting fusion of indian and modern references. We're going to be putting up our fashion work over the next couple of quarters so expect more studio work from me

The Canon logo

Canon logo
I have always liked the Canon logo as far as a brand goes and even remember drawing it on gutters in my notebooks. Since we've largely standardized on Canon gear, I was looking up some info on the parent company and found some interesting info out on the origins of their brand.

Who knew that it started out as Kwanon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy?

The Daruma

orange photography's daruma - photo by gene x hwang/orange photography
This is the Daruma that my parents gave to me for the business. I didn't really know what the meaning/story was behind it so my Dad explained it to me. Here's the details...

"The gift we gave you for celebration of the new phase of your business is a traditional Japanese figurine of the great Buddhist monk called Daruma. He is the founder of Zen Buddhism. He was born in southern India. His Buddhist name is Bodhidharma. He came to China in the sixth century to spread Buddhism, and settled in the temple Shaolin (the very famous same named martial arts originate from this temple).

Our beautiful city

One of the great things about our jobs is the various ways we get to see what goes on in San Francisco, but sometimes just looking at the physical city itself is a pleasure.

Here's a couple shots I took from the last seven days or so...

Fire in the Mission

Fire in the Mission from Medjool
So my friend Jen Chehardy was visiting along with her roomate so I decided to take them to the Mission and after lunch at Pancho Villa we walked down Valencia and eventually made it up to the roof at Medjool.

Once we were there we were greeted with a spectacular view of San Francisco, and a plume of black smoke from a fire in the Mission.
