Gyros revisited

gyros chicken So this past weekend during First Exposures mentoring I was out taking photos with one of the mentees and came across this new gyro woman ad - this time for Chicken Gyros. I hadn't seen this one and it is nice to see a new addition to the library of stock gyro women in the posters (as we've noted before on our blog).

My mentee was mostly documenting graffiti and I actually was able to learn a bit more about various taggers.

Here's my mentee at work!

Bay to Breakers 2008

They're up! Check out the photos from Bay to Breakers 2008. Can you believe all this happened before 10:30am? It was an early start Sunday morning, but we powered through on mimosas and all that zany energy in the air. Some of my favorite were the Tetris folks and Girl with A Pearl Earring with her very own Vermeer. oh yeah and the return of the Elvises.

Birth of the Cool - Oakland Museum

Case Study House #21 remix

We had a grand time shooting the gala opening for The Birth of Cool exhibit at the Oakland Museum. We set up a greenscreen photo station to recreate the above Julius Shulman image, "Case Study House #21". The original 1958 image (left) features Pierre Koenig, the architect of the house, standing at the stereo. While poking around the web, I found some images of the same house, that Shulman returned to shoot fifty years later when it was up for sale in 2006. Cool indeed... check those out here.

Maverick's legend Jeff Clark @ Casa Real

Jeff Clark - founder of Mavericks Well one of the most fun things about event photography that I really enjoy is the fact that you never know who you might meet. This past weekend I was shooting at Casa Real, where we were shooting an event that Method 42 had produced and I ran into surf legend Jeff Clark.

Most people have heard of Mavericks, the surf competition up here in Northern California and may have seen the movie Riding Giants in which Clark plays a prominent role, having been the first to regularly surf Mavericks before it became the big wave competition it is today. Clark has a shop now and designs custom surf boards.

Creativity Explored 25th Anniversary Benefit

Creativity Explored 25th Anniversary Benefit Last night Creativity Explored had their 25th Anniversary Benefit at Foreign Cinema. The event had a silver theme to it (25 years, the silver anniversary) and most of the artists, mentors, board members and supporters were on hand on a beautiful and balmy evening.

Creativity Explored does some great work and if you are an artist yourself or a supporter of the arts, CE is a great organization to get behind. In their own words, they are "a nonprofit visual arts center where artists with developmental disabilities create, exhibit, and sell art."

robots at the san jose museum of art - photography by orange photography /gene x hwang Currently the San Jose Museum of Art has an exhibition called Robots. Since we do quite a lot of shooting over at the museum for green screen, on-site printing and various photo booths and candids, we get to see a lot of the work throughout the year. The Robots exhibit is pretty interesting and there are some great pieces. This piece is located outdoors and he was keeping an evil eye on us during our last shoot there a couple weekends ago.

Flowers | Weddings - San Francisco Bay Area

Floral designs by Natalie Bowen, wedding photography by Orange Photography
Last weekend we shot a wedding down in San Jose and when you do a lot of weddings you see a lot of the same vendors around. At this particular wedding there seemed to be a lot of 'A-team' players and it's always nice to work with top vendors. These floral designs were done by Natalie Bowen of Natalie Bowen Floral Design. She's based in San Francisco but does work all over the Bay Area.

Catching Lighting

lightning So flying back from Costa Rica above El Salvador I saw this storm cloud out the airplane window. There was lightning in the cloud but it was hard to catch being night time and having to hand hold the camera as well as try to catch a series of lighting. Most of them were just the clouds glowing but I lucked out on this shot.

On April 17 SF Camerawork’s First Exposures hosts a special fundraising event of music and art at the popular 111 Minna Gallery and nightclub. The funds raised by this benefit will help us to send six of our talented young photographers to Ghana, West Africa to work with a likeminded group of young photographers there. This trip will build on a previously established photo exchange and provide these deserving students a rare opportunity to travel to a foreign land and participate in an amazing photographic and cultural experience. Mitsubishi features Orange Photography (on-site printing and green screen)

mitsubishi sponsors Orange Photography Event photographers We've been using Mitsubishi printers ever since we started doing some on-site printing at events and we've always been pleased with the results. Their printers are well built and really stand up to constant use. Since we've also spoken at numerous seminars and conferences, we got to talking with them directly and they've decided to feature Orange Photography. We're honored to be on their website and continue to use their products. Many photographers have asked us about what we use and primarily now we use the CP-9500 and CP-9550DW Digital Color Photo Printers. They are dye sublimation and the print quality is superb as well as how quickly they print.

The other Olympics...

2008 Arby's Olympics
So while the Olympic torch was stashed away for Wednesday's torch run, and a rally was held at United Nations Plaza to support Tibet, there was another event going on in the same spirit of the Games... the Arby's Olympics - held at San Francisco's only Arby's in the Outer Sunset.

The event was organized on Yelp and was an eclectic group of folks. The idea was hatched last year at Scott Howard of all places and in it's second year attracted a larger crowd and included sponsored awards for two of the categories (graciously sponsored by Arby's themselves!).

In the end the two winners of the Arby's Spirit Awards were:
- Most amount of meat consumed in one sandwich- ChrisT - 40 oz
- Most Beef n Cheddars eaten - Anthony L- 9

Film (analog) and the romanticism of vignetting

alison bridal portrait One of the things that's obvious with digital when it first came out was the lack of vignetting (unless you were using a really crappy lens or toy camera). With the advent of the full frame sensors I saw a return of the vignette and with Lightroom being a popular tool and one we use quite a bit here at Orange, I've noticed how romantic an image can become with the vignetting. I don't know if this is because of the warmth and familiarity that those of us from the film days recall of the vignetting and the lack thereof in less than full sized sensors? Or maybe it's just how the vignetting pulls the focus in more to the central area of a photo?

While editing a recent shoot I couldn't ignore it.. The shot above has the vignette and I've also posted the original version below the jump...

Photo booths with on-site printing

At the San Jose Museum of Art
So we do a lot of photo booths at various corporate, private and social events. This was a shot taken at the San Jose Museum of Art this past weekend. We had two stations set up to take portraits of couples for a private party and in a separate room we had our printers set up. People as usual started to relax and have more fun with the booths as the evening went on and we actually kept them open an extra hour just because of their popularity. This is always a hit and we also often do it with green screen as well.

This was one of the quick shots I took which was totally hand held since the moon reflects so much light. I was surprised that I could shoot it with such a fast shutter speed - here's the specs: Shutter speed: 1/500 sec, Aperture: 5.6, ISO: 400

manufactured landscapes DVD, edward burtynsky - to the best of our knowledge There's a nice interview with Edward Burtynsky on To the Best of Our Knowledge that ran this weekend. I heard it last night night and you can listen to the podcast online.

Jennifer Baichwal produced the film Manufactured Landscapes about Burtynsky's work, and it's an excellent film which is now available on DVD. This past Saturday we were on hand to do some more green screen event photography up in Oakville and Anderson Valley. The shoot was for Silver Oak Wineries and it was a lot of fun albeit the weather wasn't so cooperative, but still there were pretty big crowds on hand. (I think we ended up printing over 1,000 5x7s!)

Since it was cold and wet outside, we used an image of the vineyard as the background which we superimposed onto the composite. Here's Hannah and Melody fighting over the 1993 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon magnum - some very good wine! The original shot is below...

Strictly Business 2

LAX delays...
So ASMP brought back the Strictly Business series and the first one of SB2 was down in Southern California (Torrance to be exact) this past weekend. There were almost 200 photographers in attendance and a lot of great information shared.

For those who are starting out or in the middle of their careers as well, I'd suggest checking it out. There are three more cities scheduled for the rest of this year, and the presenters go over things that almost any photographer can benefit from. This was one of the best seminars I've attending focusing on smart business practices as well as a great opportunity to meet and network with fellow photographers.

Oh yeah the photo's relevance? San Francisco Chronicle photographer Craig Lee and I were on the same flight back to SFO, but we got delayed at LAX and the expressions on the various folks in this image were pretty funny - you can tell a lot of them were also stuck there with us... I hadn't seen Larry at the party last year and we had a nice little chat about art, etc. As usual an eclectic group of people at the Getty Mansion - look for full coverage in the Nob Hill Gazette with insight and scoop from Catherine Bigelow!

Eat, Drink, Be Merry!

orange exposure event photography san francisco convention photographers
So we had a rare evening off and took the studio out to dinner and drinks last night. We had a solid dinner at the Oak Room at the Westin St. Francis and then went for drinks at Bacchus Kirk following. Now it's back to more client holiday party photography as we'll be doing about ten over the next couple days... Happy Holidays!

49ers vs. Vikings

Maurice Hicks shreds the Viking D
Maurice Hicks gains some yardage during San Francisco's 27-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at Monster Park on Sunday Dec. 9th, 2007. We were on hand to shoot the game as we also photographed the opening ceremony for Standard Pacific's awarding of scholarships to three students on the field. Unfortunately the 49ers weren't able to pull out a victory for the home team though.

Green Screen Photography for Holiday Parties

Green screen is a really popular type of event photography that we do here at Orange. During the holiday season, many of our clients ask for green screen photography which entails shooting against a chroma-key backdrop. Then the background is dropped out digitally and the image is then put onto whatever other image/scene you want. At one of our Saturday evening parties, our client had us shoot several different scenes from around the world. Here's three photos showing how green screen photography is done.

Step 1 - take the shot against the chroma key background:

Tony Award winner Duncan Sheik

Duncan Sheik
Tony Award winner Duncan Sheik was in town for ACT's Producers Circle dinner tonight. I was fortunate enough to have seen Spring Awakening on Broadway with my sister earlier this year so it was nice to see the man behind the music. Of course having grown up in the 80s I also recall him from his big hit back then. He still looks pretty young but then I guess I hope I don't look too old too!

Bay Bridge moonrise

Bay Bridge Moon Rise
Today was spent checking out art at various galleries, including a trip to 49 Geary specifically to check out the Edward Burtynsky Quarries prints at Robert Koch gallery. If I was wealthier I would have picked one up as a gift and got some of my holiday shopping done but instead I didn't buy anything today.

The new Crouching Spider by Louise Bourgeois on the Embarcadero was another stop and it's a nice piece, although I wish it was given a bit more space but I'll take public art whenever we can get it (well, almost any).

AP / Paul Sakuma

Paul Sakuma/AP
You've probably seen the photo credit: Paul Sakuma/AP if you've read any news articles in the last few years. Whether it's locally here in the San Francisco Bay Area or throughout the world, Paul Sakuma's photos get out there. He's an AP shooter based out here and today for Oracle OpenWorld he was shooting Larry Ellison during his keynote.

Robert Holmes | Travel and Stock Photography seminar

Travel and Stock Photography bob holmes
Robert Holmes' Travel and Stock Photography seminar for Fotovision at Orange was a success today. Here Bob explains some marketing strategies after a demonstration of digital railroad where his work is also featured. The seminar was pretty instructive and the group of photographers participating had some impressive portfolios of work. Ah to be a travel photographer!

Yum: wedding caterers

Mojgan
So we shoot lots of weddings here at Orange and of course you get to eat a wide range of meals. This past weekend I shot a wedding where Hugh Groman Catering were the caterers and the food was fantastic. The butternut squash ravioli was some of the best I've had and the salad was delish too. Definitely a nice team to work with as well. Here's a pic of the bride taking her shoes off to get her boogie on.

Lauren Greenfield: Thin

thin lauren greenfield
Thinthink lauren greenfield is a film by photographer Lauren Greenfield, a member of VII, and someone with whom I share an interest in how womens body image is affected by society and media. I first met her at her opening at Robert Koch gallery in San Francisco for Girl Culture and have followed her work since then.

Thin takes a look at anorexia and follows several women in a treatment facility in Florida. It's a documentary that is a very intimate look at the problem and one of the most striking things was how many of the women had to leave treatment prematurely because their insurance ran out. Since the film premiered in 2006, it was shot and predated the current health care debate and highlights many of the shortcomings in our country, but more importantly takes a close look at the impact of our culture's obsession with body image.

Last minute double header: Carrots and SFMOMA

SFMOMA Member Session

So we had to put the power or Orange to work and help out some friends for the Opening Party at Carrots. Even though all of our photographers were out shooting we still were able to get some shots from the opening (see below).

At SFMOMA it was another Member Session, this one for Douglas Gordon. There was a nice installation by Soo-Hwa Yuan there and you should be seeing some of the shots in San Francisco Magazine too so keep your eyes peeled!

Powdered Toast Man @ Holy Cow!

Powdered Toast Man!
Having been a fan of Ren & Stimpy from years ago, I was psyched to see Powdered Toast Man at Holy Cow last night - definitely a great costume! Here he is with some fools who probably are out of Powdered Toast. Lots of fun costumes for the party last night. Even the Supreme Leader had time to kick it with some Western homies:

Now that was an earthquake!

Bobblehead bouncing from the earthquake just now!
Well, just got back from photographing at City Hall for the Mayor's reception of Aer Lingus which just started service to San Francisco. The studio was shaking quite a bit and I heard something crash upstairs. My earthquake bobblehead was even bouncing a bit... (re-enacted in the photo above).

This was the biggest shake I've personally felt in my nine years in San Francisco and it lasted pretty long!

Control/Anton Corbijn

control Anton Corbijn joy division Photographer Anton Corbijn's debut as a director is Control, a biopic about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, and it's a wonderful film.

Having been heavily influenced by the Manchester sound and aesthetic, it was nice to see this film and how Corbijn treated the subject matter.

The film is infused with the music and feel of 1970's Manchester (Macclesfield, more specifically) and those who are familiar with that era and time will get a kick out of references like the ones to George Best and Man City Blue.

Definitely recommend the film which does a great job telling the story of Curtis and is also shot very well (on Kodak black and white film) and appropriately for the storyline...

Japan Society of Northern California's 2007 Award of Honor Gala
We covered the Japan Society of Northern California's 2007 Award of Honor Gala. I wasn't quite sure what the crowd would be comprised of but was a bit surprised to see San Francisco 49er Vernon Davis there. He was probably the most well known person as well as the two honorees, Mr. Yuzaburo Mogi and Mr. Philip Kan Gotanda.

Fotovision: Reinventing Travel and Stock Photography for a Brave New World

fotovision stock photography seminar at orange exposure/orange photography
We're happy to once again be hosting Fotovision for their next workshop entitled: Reinventing Travel and Stock Photography for a Brave New World.

Here's a quick synopsis of the program: "Fotovision has an upcoming workshop on Nov 11th with Bob Holmes: Reinventing Travel and Stock Photography for a Brave New World and we now have a space for that workshop at Orange Photography. I think this will be a great workshop for new and seasoned photographers alike. The focus is really on finding a way to respond to the dynamic changes in the market and we all could use some pointers in that department."

More Olympians and Best-Selling authors

Vince Poscente @ Accelerate '07
We shoot a lot of events and popular speakers are Olympians. For some reason we seem to get more Winter Olympians than Summer, and at Riverbed's Accelerate '07 this week in San Francisco, Vince Poscente, an Olympian and author of The Age of Speed: Learning to Thrive in a More-Faster-Now World gave a nice presentation about speed, a relevant topic for the conference. He was pretty dynamic and energetic and seemed to do a great job with the crowd.

Octavia Boulevard at night...

Park on Octavia Boulevard @ Hayes
Had a chance to show a guest from out of town around our city, and while relaxing in the park on Octavia Boulevard just snapped off a shot of some hipsters taking their dog out for a midnight run in the park. We've been doing a lot of gigs at night as usual, but most are indoors so it was kind of nice to be out and taking some shots just for fun of our wonderful city.

Gyros and Stock Images/Licensing...

gyros
So I am wondering if everyone else is as familiar with this woman holding a gyro as I am (excuse the cell phone image quality here). It seems every time I'm somewhere that there's a restaurant serving gyros, I see this exact sign. I am not sure if the gyro stock imagery market is small or if this is truly the best and/or cheapest image, but this woman is ubiquitous (she's even on MySpace!).

Anyhow, I hope that both the model and the photographer who shot this were compensated appropriately.

Moon over the strip...

The moon over the strip from the Orleans Arena
Well it's been insane of late as things have taken Orange all over the World. Spain last week and now Las Vegas again - this time for the Olympia Weekend. Had a chance to get some air on the smoking deck at the Orleans Arena and there was this great view of the strip with the moon just sitting above it. I didn't have the right gear to get a better shot, but snapped this one off hand-held.

Olafur Eliasson Opening at SFMOMA

Olafur Eliasson @ SFMOMA
Olafur Eliasson's exhibition opening was tonight at SFMOMA and the museum was packed with folks checking out his latest work. Halou and Zoe Keating were on hand playing downstairs and there was a nice mix of people on hand. The exhibition runs from this Saturday through Sunday, February 24, 2008 and I would highly recommend checking it out when you have allotted time to interact with everything at a nice leisurely pace.

The Freight Elevator with Aida

Aida Aragon in the freight elevator
I've been using the freight elevator for a few shots when I do studio work with physique athletes and today used the back side of the elevator to get some silhouetted shots. I like how the edge lighting works on the silhouette when the light bounces around the elevator shaft. This is IFBB Professional figure athlete Aida Aragon who is competing next weekend in Dallas, TX.

Juliana Jade

Juliana Jade
This past weekend I was covering the USA Figure and Bodybuilding Championships. I had met Juliana in Seattle earlier in the year and she was competing at the show so we set up a shoot. She's a great model and although it was ridiculously hot outside, we got some nice shots in. This was just laying on a rare patch of grass while the 2nd shot was in a fake rock cave - how very Vegas!
