The other Olympics...

So while the Olympic torch was stashed away for Wednesday's torch run, and a rally was held at United Nations Plaza to support Tibet, there was another event going on in the same spirit of the Games... the Arby's Olympics - held at San Francisco's only Arby's in the Outer Sunset.
The event was organized on Yelp and was an eclectic group of folks. The idea was hatched last year at Scott Howard of all places and in it's second year attracted a larger crowd and included sponsored awards for two of the categories (graciously sponsored by Arby's themselves!).
In the end the two winners of the Arby's Spirit Awards were:
- Most amount of meat consumed in one sandwich- ChrisT - 40 oz
- Most Beef n Cheddars eaten - Anthony L- 9

Control/Anton Corbijn
Photographer Anton Corbijn's debut as a director is Control, a biopic about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, and it's a wonderful film.
Having been heavily influenced by the Manchester sound and aesthetic, it was nice to see this film and how Corbijn treated the subject matter.
The film is infused with the music and feel of 1970's Manchester (Macclesfield, more specifically) and those who are familiar with that era and time will get a kick out of references like the ones to George Best and Man City Blue.
Definitely recommend the film which does a great job telling the story of Curtis and is also shot very well (on Kodak black and white film) and appropriately for the storyline...

ah, beef

This is in dialogue with the Gyro poster blog entry. I found these faded posters in the window of a seedy butcher shop. The kid is totally creepy!

"The Bean" (Cloud Gate)

I got to make it back to Millennium Park this afternoon where I shot a different model about a year ago. The Bean of course is one of the signature art pieces in the park and is nearby the Frank Gehry designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion. This was just a 'where's waldo' style shot I took underneath since I really love the flow of how the scene shifts as you walk and stare upwards. Since I had a wide angle it worked better this time. I kinda wish I had a fisheye to see how crazy the image could have looked - next time!

Bug Spider

This is a work by David Fambrough who used to live in Reno, where it is installed on a rooftop next door to the SPCA. I was shooting with Lindsey Cope nearby when I noticed it. If you're interested, apparently you can buy his other similar piece in the :bug car: series: Tarantula.

The Lovemakers @ DNA Lounge

Last night being the only night I'll be in San Francisco the rest of this month after returning from shooting up in the Pacific Northwest, I decided to go out and my friends were invited to see The Lovemakers play at the DNA Lounge in SOMA so I took along my camera and snapped a few shots off during their set. I hadn't heard them before, but it was a pretty good show.

Polarizing filters

This shot was all done in camera. I was flying into Orlando International last night and saw the sun peeking through the clouds. I was thinking of how when you get that kind of light, it's often when you can see a rainbow (if it were actually raining). Since the sunlight was going into the water below, I thought about quickly putting on my polarizing filter and catching a shot to see if I could record that prismatic effect.
Luckily it turned out since this was about the only chance I had at the photo. When we landed there was a shot I totally missed of a plane taking off in front of the streaming sunlight coming in through the clouds that created that effect.

Chinatown Toys

Whenever I get free weekend mornings, I like taking my camera into Chinatown. With 40,000 members of the local community, some kids grow up never having to leave the 20 block area. There's really no reason to venture out when there are more toys in Chinatown than all of San Francisco combined.

Anna and the Elephant

The weather in Las Vegas was a bit cooler than we anticipated so we had to adjust but it's always about flexibility when you shoot on location. We had planned shooting out in the desert and did for a little bit but on the way back to the Strip we passed this elephant on the side of the road, and had to take a shot... (model: Anna Tomasiello)

10:15 on a Christmas Night...
So we're all spread out for the holidays and I'm now in the town I grew up in - Auburn, AL.
Last night I went out to a place that used to be a restaurant but was one of the few bars open on Christmas night. The place was packed since it was one of the few options and I decided to bring the camera along. I totally forgot about the 'zap' man - who were the party photographers during college, but some people thought that's who I was and I decided to turn that into my role for the evening albeit in a different style...

Dirtybird at Shine

Last night I had a rare night off so I had dinner with my friend Julie for a belated birthday party and then we went to Shine where it was Dirtybird. A good night although I still couldn't leave the studio without a camera...

Our beautiful city

Tonight I shot a private event at the Hotel Vitale and the view there is really nice especially at dusk. I took this shot of the Ferry Building and was pleased with how it turned out. Over the weekend and tonight I've been reminded of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful city as San Francisco.

Microsoft + Titanic = ???

Last night we shot an event for Microsoft at the Metreon and it took place at the Titanic - The Artifacts Exhibit which is a pretty cool installation. I guess it's been mega-popular as the stay has been extended until Jan 2007. There are some interesting facts and of course the historic pieces that are part of it give you a great feel for what it must have been like in 1912. I overheard some folks saying that first class costed the equivalent of $40K (US) so I guess that's a nice posh way to go if your time is up.

Orange girl makes good!

Jen Whitney, one of our former Oranges who's gone back to photojournalism grad school at the top school in the nation - the University of Missouri - recently got her first front page lead photo for the Columbia Missourian.
While we miss Jen here, she's getting valuable experience and learning a lot about farm animals and 4H to boot - things we definitely were not able to teach her here at Orange!

we love vino in the summer time

...or any time of the year really. But no words can express this as much as these pics do.... We unfortunately cannot disclose the winery at which these photos were taken as we might be forever banned from it...and this would be bad.

xeno kids

We shoot a lot of events where there are various performers doing their stuff. One of the ones I always enjoy is the Xeno performance collective. This girl in particular always catches my attention and I know that Orange photographers have got all sorts of cool shots of her.

From the inside

This week I've shot a couple interior/setup shots of places I've previously photographed and at the Hyatt they did a really nice job with it. Here are two looks at the same room with just the lighting adjusted.

The first shot...

Oftentimes I find that the very first shot taken turns out quite interesting. The subjects are usually relaxed in the sense that it's not an 'official' shot but more to get composition, lighting, etc. In this case, I was shooting the overall champion of the 2006 Ironman figure championships, Halcyon Duarte, the morning after the competition and we finally got some sun and some warmth. She was just getting ready when I snapped this.

I'm a Photographer Too!!

Even though I'm an engineer here at OP, it's not all about bits, bugs, and tech for me.... I can shoot too!! And no fancy SLR here, just a plain point & shoot digicam in 'soft, blurry' mode. This pot of daisies was basking in beautiful windowlight so my photography instincts told me to shoot it.

Our beautiful city
One of the great things about our jobs is the various ways we get to see what goes on in San Francisco, but sometimes just looking at the physical city itself is a pleasure.
Here's a couple shots I took from the last seven days or so...

Fire in the Mission

So my friend Jen Chehardy was visiting along with her roomate so I decided to take them to the Mission and after lunch at Pancho Villa we walked down Valencia and eventually made it up to the roof at Medjool.
Once we were there we were greeted with a spectacular view of San Francisco, and a plume of black smoke from a fire in the Mission.

and hair again...

So my good friend Stacey Miller (a great stylist at diPietro Todd Salon in Union Square) had her soiree and I surprisingly found myself in her slideshow - but she was the subject of a photo that I entered into the 7x7 Magazine Bring on the Night contest a year ago that was selected - so it was only fair...

the passion of music

_halou
before my passion for photography, i had a passion for music. but since i was more untalented as a musican, the closet i can become an 'artist' is being a photographer. but there is also the saying that, if you love something, don't make it a living.

coming home

Traveling for shoots can be a lot of fun, but sometimes you miss home, and when home is San Francisco there's a lot to miss. This morning I had to get up super early to catch my flight since I had a wedding to shoot back in SF when I arrived so it was nice to wake up on the flight and peer out the window of the aircraft and see a familiar sight...

The trail ended on a beach with one of the only waterfalls in california at ends at the beach.
