Birth of the Cool - Oakland Museum

We had a grand time shooting the gala opening for The Birth of Cool exhibit at the Oakland Museum. We set up a greenscreen photo station to recreate the above Julius Shulman image, "Case Study House #21". The original 1958 image (left) features Pierre Koenig, the architect of the house, standing at the stereo. While poking around the web, I found some images of the same house, that Shulman returned to shoot fifty years later when it was up for sale in 2006. Cool indeed... check those out here.

Edward Burtynsky and Manufactured Landscapes - interview
There's a nice interview with Edward Burtynsky on To the Best of Our Knowledge that ran this weekend. I heard it last night night and you can listen to the podcast online.
Jennifer Baichwal produced the film Manufactured Landscapes about Burtynsky's work, and it's an excellent film which is now available on DVD. If you haven't seen Burtynsky's work before, it's highly recommended to view it preferably in a gallery environment since the impact of the imagery is magnified by it's actual presence.

The Knot, Real Wedding

Lea and Gene's wedding, one of my clients from 2006, is being showcased in the latest issue of the The Knot (Northern California issue). They have even put together a little slideshow from that wedding on their site.

Fotovision: Reinventing Travel and Stock Photography for a Brave New World

We're happy to once again be hosting Fotovision for their next workshop entitled: Reinventing Travel and Stock Photography for a Brave New World.
Here's a quick synopsis of the program: "Fotovision has an upcoming workshop on Nov 11th with Bob Holmes: Reinventing Travel and Stock Photography for a Brave New World and we now have a space for that workshop at Orange Photography. I think this will be a great workshop for new and seasoned photographers alike. The focus is really on finding a way to respond to the dynamic changes in the market and we all could use some pointers in that department."

The Freight Elevator with Aida

I've been using the freight elevator for a few shots when I do studio work with physique athletes and today used the back side of the elevator to get some silhouetted shots. I like how the edge lighting works on the silhouette when the light bounces around the elevator shaft. This is IFBB Professional figure athlete Aida Aragon who is competing next weekend in Dallas, TX.

Juliana Jade

This past weekend I was covering the USA Figure and Bodybuilding Championships. I had met Juliana in Seattle earlier in the year and she was competing at the show so we set up a shoot. She's a great model and although it was ridiculously hot outside, we got some nice shots in. This was just laying on a rare patch of grass while the 2nd shot was in a fake rock cave - how very Vegas!

Girly men...

Last night I was covering the 2007 NPC Contra Costa Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships and guest posing was current Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler. He's always known to go out into the crowds to pose and did that once again to the delight of the fans (even those in the balcony).

First Fridays - Phoenix, AZ, USA (photo by Betsy Schneider)

Having a few days in between my shoots, I was lucky enough to find out about First Fridays in downtown Phoenix, which is apparently the largest art opening type of event in the US. It's like the First Thursdays we have in San Francisco, but I was taken by how many families were strolling about with their kids exposing them to all sorts of arts and expressionism. It was great to also see kids artwork on display in some galleries and one of my favorites was The Kitchenette (site link doesn't seem to be working) which was displaying new works by Betsy Schneider (photo above).

TED Talks - Nachtwey, Burtynsky and more

I'm a huge fan of James Nachtwey and you can check out his excellent presentation from TED this year online. The TED website is great because they have all the presentations from the conference online. Edward Burtynksky is also another of my favorite photographers and his presentation from 2005 is also online. They're both about 30 minutes but well worth viewing. The site has as log of other good content too from luminaries like Phil Borges and Frans Lanting

SFis Orange

If you pick up the latest issue of SFiS throughout San Francisco you'll see Orange photographers Jack Huynh, Vasna Wilson and Gene X Hwang's work featured in a variety of spreads. The cover was shot by John Lee who does some really nice work, but pop it open and check out some of the Orange crews work!

Dirtybird at Shine

Last night I had a rare night off so I had dinner with my friend Julie for a belated birthday party and then we went to Shine where it was Dirtybird. A good night although I still couldn't leave the studio without a camera...

When in Rome...
Finally got around to posting some pictures from my trip to Italy in May. I visited Rome, Florene, Venice, and the Amalfi coast for both vacation and my friend's wedding. It was an extraordinary trip and one I will never forget. This picture is from a series of photos of this good-looking couple in Rome hanging out an a street corner enjoying both their gelato and each other. However i was able to catch this moment of wandering eye from the girl... naughty. You can view more of my pictures from my trip here.

HARD-Fi @ Popscene

After shooting at SFMOMA for their Member Sessions I ended up at Popscene where a British band HARD-Fi was playing. Since I had my gear with me, I decided to take a few snaps of the band, especially their intense-looking lead singer, Richard Archer.

Getty Kids

Saw these kids running around at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, CA this weekend with their masks on and had to grab this shot. I wish I could have been closer but I kinda like the one shot I was able to get.

kid friendly company

although we shot a number of engagements recently where the main subjects were kids and as much they i enjoy their energy and candor, i think i got my fill this weekend. trying to photograph 20 kids running around in an inflatable playgroud where they're moving 10 times faster than they normally do was one of my more phyiscally challenging shoots. on occassions, they would stand still and i get some interesting adult like expression from them. you have to wonder what's going on in the mind when they look all serioius. maybe they thinking about how it's all going down hill from here ; )

Bows and Arrows Grand Opening

This is sort of out of the Orange sphere but nonetheless relevent in the eyes of the first orange hire, that's me (last known blogger in sf). But back to the story....my boyfriend Jesse just completed the design and build of Bows and Arrows in Berkeley and to honor him and the new space, which happens to sell an elaborate assortment of vintage sneakers, we are throwing a Part-ay of sorts this Sunday and you (yes, you the reader) are welcome to come by for a drink or 5. Hope to see you there.

Happy Birthday to us

So last week was our birthday and it's hard to believe it's gone by so fast. From the pad on Natoma to the studio/gallery space here at 1261 Howard and all the changes in between. From Colin to Traci to Scott to Katie to Sarah and Tara. It's been quite the ride but I feel like we're just cresting over the climb and the real ride is about to start.

This isn't directly photography related but here are some really useful tools that we use all the time:
TinyURL: this is a great site for making short URLs when you need to send really long ones since often email programs will wrap line breaks making long URLs not work right

Murakami film coming!
As a big fan of Haruki Murakami, one of the most arresting elements of his novels is the imagery that his prose elicits.
I've always wondered how one of his novels would be translated into film, and now that opportunity will present itself when Tony Takitani debuts here in the US.
If you haven't read many novels lately, I would highly recommend any of Murakami's.
