Gay weddings and wedding photography

gay marriage, same sex marriage, same sex weddings, same-sex couples, same-sex marriage
We Do, the book that came out of the historic gay wedding decision by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom around Valentine's Day in 2004 featured some photography by the Orange team and we've been shooting a lot of civil unions from before and after that historic time. With the California Supreme Court recently passing the law authorizing same-sex unions there's been a lot of interest in those weddings especially here in San Francisco.

If you're interested in a same-sex wedding and are looking for a photographer, don't hesitate to check out our wedding options on the site!

Flowers | Weddings - San Francisco Bay Area

Floral designs by Natalie Bowen, wedding photography by Orange Photography
Last weekend we shot a wedding down in San Jose and when you do a lot of weddings you see a lot of the same vendors around. At this particular wedding there seemed to be a lot of 'A-team' players and it's always nice to work with top vendors. These floral designs were done by Natalie Bowen of Natalie Bowen Floral Design. She's based in San Francisco but does work all over the Bay Area.

Film (analog) and the romanticism of vignetting

alison bridal portrait One of the things that's obvious with digital when it first came out was the lack of vignetting (unless you were using a really crappy lens or toy camera). With the advent of the full frame sensors I saw a return of the vignette and with Lightroom being a popular tool and one we use quite a bit here at Orange, I've noticed how romantic an image can become with the vignetting. I don't know if this is because of the warmth and familiarity that those of us from the film days recall of the vignetting and the lack thereof in less than full sized sensors? Or maybe it's just how the vignetting pulls the focus in more to the central area of a photo?

While editing a recent shoot I couldn't ignore it.. The shot above has the vignette and I've also posted the original version below the jump...

Justin Fone Premiere

Justin Fone wedding videography
So our good friend Justin Fone who's an excellent wedding videographer hosted a premiere party at his loft space in SOMA tonight. Great event with a lot of the top vendors in the industry there. It's sometimes a bit amazing to realize how much talent there is in your group of friends and it's great to see everyone succeeding while maintaining their creative visions. Congratulations Justin!

Ah gotta love the cell phone photo quality!

a new wedding album

Coffee-table book albums have been really popular with the wedding clients lately. They're like those gorgeous hardcover photobooks you can buy at MOMA, but with your own images. I'm pretty excited about this new style we're offering this year. It's a 10"x10" coffee-table book with a leather cover, presented in a custom designed box. Check out the full album layout here, featuring photography by Jake, our newest associate wedding photographer (welcome!).

Once again this year we were invited to participate for the Five Star Afternoon at the Four Seasons. Being that it's invitation only there's a high percentage of top vendors for weddings and we're always proud to be involved. This year we also launched our photo booth offering and it really took off! Thanks to everyone who either stopped by our booth to check out our wedding photography as well as everyone who enjoyed the photo booth! You can find out more about both in our wedding photography section on Orange Exposure!

Yum: wedding caterers

Mojgan
So we shoot lots of weddings here at Orange and of course you get to eat a wide range of meals. This past weekend I shot a wedding where Hugh Groman Catering were the caterers and the food was fantastic. The butternut squash ravioli was some of the best I've had and the salad was delish too. Definitely a nice team to work with as well. Here's a pic of the bride taking her shoes off to get her boogie on.

my 7-7-7 wedding

Eric and Anna - 7-7-7 wedding
So there was a lot of press on July 7, 2007 weddings and I shot one myself up in Sonoma, CA. This was one of the shots from the wedding of the couple in front of the estate that the wedding was held at. The sun was setting and they stole away to take a few portraits and I liked how this one came out...

Wedding season begins...

20070210_1701.jpg

The wedding season is also full year here in the bay area and certainly the smart couples do it during off peak season. Personally, I rather photograph them in the off season because the sun is awful in Napa during the summer months ; )

antique greyscale

black and white wedding photography san francisco

My post production style has evolved over the years and the past several months have been heavy on this particular look. As much as I love black and white, sometimes i like to throw in some shades of metallic greyscale.

Fall Wedding Colors

Walking away

Catherine and Zach's wedding - san francisco wedding photography
Seeing a lot of the work of the wondeful photographers we have as part of Orange, I realize there's something about the 'walking away' shot of the just married couple that has this special energy to it. I've seen lots of great ones that Jack has taken, and when I was editing my most recent wedding, I liked this particular shot...

Erin and Thad

Erin and Thad's wedding - san francisco city hall
Erin and Thad were married here in San Francisco today at City Hall. They were such an awesome couple and it was nice to have spent time with my fellow Southerners. They were in town from Kentucky and I not only served as their photographer but also as their witness. After the lunchtime vows, they headed off on Muni to Greens for their first meal as a married couple...

Assistant's View

genex wedding shot by Briana
I think one of the cool things about assistants aside from the help and insight they can provide during a shoot is that they get shots of you working. It's funny to see what you look like while you work and to think about what was going through your mind at a particular point in time. I know I was thinking that I wish I could have been both at the far end of the aisle up front as well as where I was at the time this shot was taken...

Have camera, will travel...

One of the great things about being a photographer is the exposure to different experiences that you may not otherwise have. This past weekend I was fortunate to photograph a wedding where the bride and groom had the great idea to go sailing after the ceremony.

We set sail on the Chardonnay II in Santa Cruz for a two hour cruise on a perfect sunny Friday afternoon. Although shooting on the yacht wasn't the easiest thing, it was nevertheless a nice new challenge and an great experience.

the last wedding of the season

1370_1154_5D.jpg

it's always nice to wrap up the wedding season with a wonderful and fun couple such as i had this weekend. it's always a big risk with the weather during off season weddings but the weather couldn't get any better for a brisk afternoon. the wedding happen to be in berkeley where there were a bit more trees and it reminded me of the fall when i used to live back in the east coast. as the sun was setting on the uc campus, i couldn't help but drag my client out on campus to capture them under the 'tree of fire'.

Going to the Chapel . . .

And I'm engaged! After six years of dating and one special weekend hanging out with my family he finally popped the question. Less than a week later and I am already slightly obsessed with www.theknot.com (much to Gene and Jack's chagrin - luckily we're listed as wedding photographers on there so I have a little bit of an excuse to browse!). My favorite part, surprisingly, isn't the page after page of wedding dresses or the random etiquette questions explained, but . . . .
