Bay to Breakers 2008

They're up! Check out the photos from Bay to Breakers 2008. Can you believe all this happened before 10:30am? It was an early start Sunday morning, but we powered through on mimosas and all that zany energy in the air. Some of my favorite were the Tetris folks and Girl with A Pearl Earring with her very own Vermeer. oh yeah and the return of the Elvises.
Your favorites?

Bay to Breakers 2008 photo booth and bar!

How convenient! Our studio is located right along the Bay to Breakers race course. Yet again, we'll be setting up a bar and photo shoot for all the hams. This image was taken at last year's party. Racers and cheering fans alike are invited to de/rehydrate at our "red cup" station. We'll be out there 8:30am - ???

Lauren Greenfield: Thin

thin lauren greenfield
Thinthink lauren greenfield is a film by photographer Lauren Greenfield, a member of VII, and someone with whom I share an interest in how womens body image is affected by society and media. I first met her at her opening at Robert Koch gallery in San Francisco for Girl Culture and have followed her work since then.

Thin takes a look at anorexia and follows several women in a treatment facility in Florida. It's a documentary that is a very intimate look at the problem and one of the most striking things was how many of the women had to leave treatment prematurely because their insurance ran out. Since the film premiered in 2006, it was shot and predated the current health care debate and highlights many of the shortcomings in our country, but more importantly takes a close look at the impact of our culture's obsession with body image.

The Freight Elevator with Aida

Aida Aragon in the freight elevator
I've been using the freight elevator for a few shots when I do studio work with physique athletes and today used the back side of the elevator to get some silhouetted shots. I like how the edge lighting works on the silhouette when the light bounces around the elevator shaft. This is IFBB Professional figure athlete Aida Aragon who is competing next weekend in Dallas, TX.

the buddha collection

CRW_1234.jpg

I recently visited Spirit Rock Meditation Center up in Marin for a few days of "relaxation". I wasn't suppose to 'work' but being a photographer at such an serene and beautiful place didn't leave much choice in the matter. I've been interested in statues of buddha (specifically his facial features) for some time now and at some point i may build on a decent collection of imagery around the subject. Buddhism as a whole greatly interests me and there's a lot of projects i have around the subject matter. I just hope there's enough time.

Bows and Arrows Grand Opening

reflection.jpg

This is sort of out of the Orange sphere but nonetheless relevent in the eyes of the first orange hire, that's me (last known blogger in sf). But back to the story....my boyfriend Jesse just completed the design and build of Bows and Arrows in Berkeley and to honor him and the new space, which happens to sell an elaborate assortment of vintage sneakers, we are throwing a Part-ay of sorts this Sunday and you (yes, you the reader) are welcome to come by for a drink or 5. Hope to see you there.

We Have a Real Gallery!!

After months of discussing, planning, and feverishly working the past couple of weeks, we finally have the long-awaited gallery space we've always wanted. We had a few patrons over for the Open Studios weekend and everyone was impressed with the space. Not bad, don't you think?

Getting Ready...

Orange Photography Gallery Opening Party
So our first show at our new space is getting pulled together and it's a bit crazy over here. Tomorrow we're going to be participating in First Thursdays as a kind of warm up for Open Studios this weekend, and then we've got a private party we're hosting the next week. Things have been crazy with several of us traveling for shoots, etc. so the place is a bit of a mess right now...

the myth of travel

People often think that traveling for work is so glamorous and fun. I can't complain since my assignments have taken me to great places like Barcelona, New York, Las Vegas and Vancouver but the reality is that when you work all week and then get on a flight to work all weekend it's not so sexy.

This past weekend I was in Chicago but in reality was in Rosemont just outside O'Hare where I probably spent 99% of my time on the property of the Hyatt Regency O'Hare.

Early mornings, late nights, and crappy hotel food aren't the best diet, but then it makes me appreciate the fantastic city I live in.
