Gyros revisited

gyros chicken So this past weekend during First Exposures mentoring I was out taking photos with one of the mentees and came across this new gyro woman ad - this time for Chicken Gyros. I hadn't seen this one and it is nice to see a new addition to the library of stock gyro women in the posters (as we've noted before on our blog).

My mentee was mostly documenting graffiti and I actually was able to learn a bit more about various taggers.

Here's my mentee at work!

Creativity Explored 25th Anniversary Benefit

Creativity Explored 25th Anniversary Benefit Last night Creativity Explored had their 25th Anniversary Benefit at Foreign Cinema. The event had a silver theme to it (25 years, the silver anniversary) and most of the artists, mentors, board members and supporters were on hand on a beautiful and balmy evening.

Creativity Explored does some great work and if you are an artist yourself or a supporter of the arts, CE is a great organization to get behind. In their own words, they are "a nonprofit visual arts center where artists with developmental disabilities create, exhibit, and sell art."

Tipping Point Benefit @ Bimbo's w/Rodrigo Y Gabriela

Ronnie Lott, board member, Tipping Point Community
So last night Tipping Point had their 2008 Benefit party at Bimbo's. They raised a lot of money for the groups they support and all sorts of luminaries were on hand. The work Tipping Point does is really impressive and you can find out more in this video they produced.

Girls Day at the Boys and Girls Club

It was just us girls at the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco event Saturday. They've created a fantastic clubhouse complete with pool tables, computer lab, photo studio, darkroom, and silk screening. The girls were really showered with attention by all the volunteers. Was great to see and document.

Ghana Youth Photo Project Fundraiser @ 111 Minna!

Ghana Youth Photo Project Fundraiser - 111 Minna
On April 17 SF Camerawork’s First Exposures hosts a special fundraising event of music and art at the popular 111 Minna Gallery and nightclub. The funds raised by this benefit will help us to send six of our talented young photographers to Ghana, West Africa to work with a likeminded group of young photographers there. This trip will build on a previously established photo exchange and provide these deserving students a rare opportunity to travel to a foreign land and participate in an amazing photographic and cultural experience. First Exposures is the Bay Area’s oldest photography mentoring program providing one to one mentoring for underserved youth ages 11-18.

Bark & Whine Ball

20080130_1849-6.jpg

We were a sponsor for the Bark & Whine Ball, the only ball you can bring your best friend. Our photo station was a pretty big hit because we were projecting the photo shoot real time as the guests in joy and amazement. Unfortunately by the end of the night, i had lost my voice trying to cajole dogs into being cooperative.

for the kids

We crossed the Bay to document the Crowden Music Center's gala at the Oakland Rotunda. It was a really lovely event with performances from the young and talented.

Compassionate Chefs Cafe

Myleen and I donated part of our lazy Sunday to shoot this year's Compassionate Chefs Cafe at the very delicious New Delhi Restaurant on Ellis Street. This was a lively Bollywood-themed event that benefitted both the Tenderloin After School Program in San Francisco and the Gandhi Ashram of New Delhi. We hear they raised over $16K! If you're interested in working with Orange as part of our Social Photography program, please let us know.

Girlstock

Orange was on hand to capture the 5th Annual Girlstock in downtown Oakland as part of our social photography program. An excellent opportunity to see some local talent at intimate venues, plus the proceeds benefit two great organizations, The Positive Resource Center and Pets Are Wonderful Support. My favorite were the completely mesmerizing, sword-balancing Suhaila Salimpour belly dancers.

Supporting the Arts

Gus Van Sant artwork at SOEX
As part of our Social Photography program, we often like to support other arts organizations, and Southern Exposure is a very cool group.

We shot Momentum, their Annual Spring Fundraiser and Art Auction and one of the pieces up for the live auction was this Gus Van Sant piece. Personally I liked a piece that ended up going for upwards of $800 so I wasn't able to take it home.
