Quotes from "Bonk"
While on vacation in Costa Rica, I picked up Bonkpage 241 - related to loss of time:
"Orgams appears to be a state not unlike that of the alien abductees one always hears about, coming to with messy hair and a chunk of time unaccounted for."
page 252 - a pretty solid description of men's behaviour:
"I give you a sentence, my favorite sentence in the entire oeuvre of Alfred Kinsey, from Sexual Behavior in the Human Female: 'Cheese crumbs spread in front of a copulating pair of rats may distract the female, but not the male.'"
You can check out my other book reviews on the site GoodReads.com - here's my profile page.
If you would like to check out my reviews of where we stayed and what we did in Costa Rica, check out my TripAdvisor page.

I really like the animation and production of the Virgin America safety announcement - just flew them for the first time this weekend and really like they way they do things:
This was definitely a good brand experience and I think they'll be popular if they can keep delivering...

MEMORY OF A RICKSHAW RIDE
MEMORY OF A RICKSHAW RIDE
Rainwater dripping on my head
In a covered rickshaw.
Aroma from jade-orchid flowers
Emitting from grandma’s silky pouch
Overflowing the enclosed rickshaw chamber.
Jingling jade bracelets around grandma’s arm
Dancing to the turn of the rickshaw rhythm
And echoing to tinkling of the rickshaw bell.
Rainwater dripping down from my head
Onto grandma’s peach-shaped shoes;
They are pretty and tiny
Fitting on grandma’s bound feet.
- by my Dad, and inspired by memories stirred from a National Geographic article on Rickshaws in the April 2008 issue

Playa del Carmen wrap...
Well, I forced myself to only carry my point-and-shoot camera when I was in Playa del Carmen except when I was actually working of course and so I didn't take too many shots, but here's a quick little recap. You can find more if you look at my posts on TripAdvisor too.
So the requisite first shot - and of course it's lovers in the water - blech!

- I was amped to go see some Lucha Libres battle it out but got sidetracked at Kool (below) hanging out with our crew who eventually shut the place down...

I love wandering around the side streets, etc and this was a tortilleria I found mostly by it's loud sound of the giant conveyor belt looking thing that grinds up the corn I guess:

The little purse shop below had wonderful colors. This German couple rode up on their bikes to check it out while I was taking the shot:

My favorite restaurant was Taqueria El Fogon at 30th Ave near 14th I think - I had no idea what I was ordering but got this melted cheese with peppers - yum yum yum:

The best hangover food - once again I didn't know what the hell I was ordering:

And finally they say Mexico City is very smoggy - when I looked out my window I saw the perfect example of that - the sky was gorgeous and blue above the clouds, but smoggy and yellow below. I wish I used one of my 'real' cameras for better dynamic range:

On site at Silver Oak...
Here I am with an umbrella above the computer to protect it from the condensation on the inside of the tent at the new Silver Oak Cellars winery in Oakville, CA. We were setting up on a drab, dreary, wet day in Napa so the tent, even though there was heating, didn't hold in the heat that much where I was printing. It didn't matter though as we were able to do the shoot quite well and had a good time with it. We're definitely looking forward to the summer release when it'll be sunny and probably too hot!

Photoshop techniques
I hate it when I create an action and then lose it. After I upgraded to CS3 I lost a few actions that I thought I had saved, but one was a technique I really liked using to tone and give a more raw effect to photos.
I just messed around for a bit to try and replicate it - not quite there, but hey if you only spend five minutes you can only expect so much...

Full Moon at Harbin

I finally got to check out Harbin Hot Springs this past week and it happened to be on a full moon evening as well which was magnificent. The cool air and warm springs were a perfect match just before the busy Christmas holidays. The trip up and back wasn't bad either in Chris' Z8 which feels like it just isn't happy until it hits 80 MPH!

Thin: Lauren Greenfield

Thin is a film by photographer Lauren Greenfield, a member of VII, and someone with whom I share an interest in how womens body image is affected by society and media. I first met her at her opening at Robert Koch gallery in San Francisco for Girl Culture and have followed her work since then.
Thin takes a look at anorexia and follows several women in a treatment facility in Florida. It's a documentary that is a very intimate look at the problem and one of the most striking things was how many of the women had to leave treatment prematurely because their insurance ran out. Since the film premiered in 2006, it was shot and predated the current health care debate and highlights many of the shortcomings in our country, but more importantly takes a close look at the impact of our culture's obsession with body image.
With a good portion of my work involving women in physique sports (bodybuilding, fitness, etc.), I've seen quite a bit of the effects of body image on the other end of the spectrum and it's inspired me to dig a little deeper in my work related to that.

Film Photo Booths
![]()
I love film photo booths and kinda dislike the digital and polaroid ones that seem to be a lot more prevalent of late. I've always said that film is going the way of fine art and accordingly there are less places supporting film processing, etc. and this is also the case in the photo booth world.
Luckily there are still many film photo booths and there's a website dedicated to them (photobooth.net) with a locator, etc.
Here in San Francisco we have a few although we've lost some too like the awesome B&W one that used to be at Elbo Room (where this photo was taken a few years ago) now replaced by a non-film booth. I was at Annie's Social Club this week though and found that they had a nice B&W film booth that rocks.
Here's a list of the places I know of in SF that have film photo booths:
- Musee Mechanique - Pier 45 - yeah the Wharf - at least there's In-n-Out there!
- Pop's Bar in the Mission - 24th @ Bryant/York

Calpis

This unfortunately named drink when translated directly from Japanese is Calpis which sounds a bit too much like cow piss, so they are using the name Calpico instead. Either way I love this stuff. While I was in Hawaii for my friends wedding, it felt like I was almost in Japan with so many Japanese tourists and Japanese stores/products but I was super psyched to find this bottle at a ubiquitous ABC Store.

So these cicadas were everywhere in Chicago when I was out there a couple weeks ago - it was the 17-year invasion and it was pretty trippy. They were landing all over on the models as well as me. Here's a shot of one that landed on one of my favorite lenses - my Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS...

A good meal...

So this weekend was the 2007 NPC Jr Nationals in Chicago although in reality the whole weekend was spent at the Hyatt Regency in Rosemont, IL. Today I actually made it into Chicago and had a good authenic tasting Mexican dinner at Perez and when I stepped outta the restaurant all sated, looked up to see a rainbow. I wanted to get a shot while it was brighter but it faded by the time I go up two blocks to the overpass where I could see the full arc of it above the Sears Tower.

what is human?

So I was checking out art galleries, and saw this entry with the intriguing logo and for some reason I thought it was a high end sperm bank. I ended up walking inside to check it out and it was very stark and modern and very trendy looking - so far so good, I thought.
A nice looking woman looked up from her desk and asked if I needed help. Since at this point I still wasn't sure what the place was, I asked her. She replied that it was a sound design studio and I thanked her and made my way on, a bit embarrassed, although I am sure she didn't suspect - or did she?!

I've been doing a good job of keepin my personal resolution to try and see more live music and enjoy more arts related experiences this year. Last night I went and checked out Amiina who had previously opened for Sigur Ros. The Japanese Internment

I found out about this old Dr. Suess cartoon from World War II while reading a book about photographer Dorothea Lange and her work during the internment of Japanese Americans. I have always been fascinated by that part of American history being an Asian American of partial Japanese heritage. I was surprised though that even Dr. Suess was on the bandwagon of paranoia about the Japanese during that time. Ansel Adams and Lange also were at odds with Lange being one of the few on the side of the Japanese Americans and seeing the civil liberties of Americans being taken away. The book is called Impounded.

Midwestern Landscape

Driving through Illinois I recalled how flat the terrain in the Midwest is. Tonight I was driving by and saw all these lights and smoke coming off the smokestacks and decided to pull over and take a shot. It was freezing though and super windy so it was tough to get a nice clear shot - then an Illinois State Trooper pulled up to check after I took this so I couldn't take any more shots after this one...

Virgin Eyes and the decisive moment

I listened to Henry Wessel speak about photography and composition. It was fascinating since it reaffirmed something that I've noticed on my own. One of his statements was: "Once you recognize something, you are less aware."
He gave an example of how once you know that a telephone pole exisits, you don't really see it in regular life. Most of us walk by telephone poles all the time, and don't notice them at all. It also has something to do with the pure mind and what it perceives and that's often evident in shots where I end up loving my first shot more than the subsequent 'more composed' images. It also reminds me of how babies have that certain look in their eyes when they look around.
Check out the full podcast here on the SFMOMA website or grab it here.

Live music week - Of Montreal

So two nights ago I was cruising around SF taking a walk and saw that Of Montreal was playing at the GAMH. I thought it was just on Sat night so didn't think much of it. My sister had put one of their songs on a mix a while back which I liked so I sent her a photo of that and then realized that they were playing on Sunday night so I decided to check them out.
Well, the show was much different than I thought since the rest of their music was definitely different in style from what I had expected. Oh well. I didn't even stay the whole show and ended up cruising over to Route 101 to finally check that dive bar out. A random evening to say the least...
Earlier in the week I saw Moving Units with my friend Julie at Cafe du Nord and that was a fun show. I hadn't heard them or the opening band and both had good energy and appealed more to my current aural aesthetic. I also love how small DuNord is and although the show was sold out it wasn't bad.
Plus being all-ages meant the bar line was short as was the bathroom lines - yes!

Today I flew into San Diego from OAK and I found a cool perspective of San Francisco that I hadn't seen before. If you are at Gate 17 you can see San Francisco including the top of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge from the window there. I was hoping our plane would be facing the same way and snapped off this shot, but I liked the perspective from inside the gate better. Will have to bring a big lens next time I travel to get a closer shot...

Wind up Bird

So this past weekend I actually didn't have to shoot on Saturday so I went by my friends' trunk show at the Craft Gym. I ended up buying myself a t-shirt from my windup bird, the name which I like of course as a reference to Haruki Murakami, my favorite novelist. This is the design on the shirt I ended up getting. Sambo Candy?
So when I got to Barcelona in September I was in the train station looking for some nice cold fluids and some foreign candy and I peered into the vending machine at the train station and saw this looking back at me.
Having grown up in the South I was familiar with the Sambo character and blackface and that's what I was initially reminded of.
So of course I had to pick up a bag of conguitos to see what the candy actually looked like. They're basically like peanut M&Ms but without the colors - they are all just dark brown.

Miami Vices

So this past weekend was spent in Miami covering the 2006 NPC Nationals and it was quite a long, packed weekend. I'm still catching up on sleep and haven't fully recovered I don't feel like. At least the weather was nice and warm although a bit muggy, especially when shooting all day long.
On Saturday night against my better judgement I did go out and Hans snapped this pic at the club with Kris Murrell (who I shot on Sunday afternoon) and IFBB Pro Carla Salotti.

This is a shot from my current piece that I'm working on. I've been flown out to work on something that'll introduce someone new with a more documentary perspective to it. This is a torso shot of Janelle Miller from earlier this week. Look for a full piece soon.

people in the background
I was finally getting caught up on editing pix from my shoots in Spain last month and was going through my Larissa Reis pix and loved this shot because of the lady in the background reading her paper. She'd probably get cropped out if this shot was used but I wanted to include her in this post at least!

Show me the muscle

So I was working at FallFest here in San Francisco photographing for Wells Fargo and San Francisco Magazine when at the end of the day this one girl came up in a group and got their photo taken which we were printing on site. I saw her sitting and chilling in from of our tent and told her the photo was ready. I coaxed her into another photo and then she busted out with the guns. Somehow she either knew I noticed them, or was just proud. Either way, she definitely caught my attention.

Pocky!

To my surprise I saw a dope ass Pocky bag while at the Olympia Expo this weekend. It was purchased in Thailand which I've noticed has been putting out some funky bags. Janeen Lankowski had a cool juice bag from Thailand and then this Pocky one. Since Pocky is one of my all time favorite snacks, I totally locked onto it when I saw this girl with it even in the crowded expo.

Orange Muscle
Back at the studio I painted up some PVC panels orange to use as a backdrop for a shoot although I haven't done the shoot yet. Then this weekend in Saskatoon at the gym we shot in they had nice orange walls and I kind of got to see how an orange backdrop would look for shoots and was quite pleased with the results. This is one of the shots shot against the orange wall which I think the panels at the studio will look like:

Steel city...

When I was in Pittsburgh last month, James Cook and I went up one of the hills on an 'incline' which was like a ski lift/escalator/room. Pittsburgh was remarkably hilly and I had no idea what to expect, but really did like the city.
We passed by this shack that was so run down, but had a running TV inside. At first I was thinking it might be an art installation but then thought better of that and it seems to be the valet hut for a nearby fancy restaurant.

The British are coming...

My friend, British journalist Hans Klein, came to San Francisco for a story he was doing on the Church of John Coltrane which is here in the city. I've always wanted to check it out but have yet to go. Hans was also in Vegas the previous week where we were both covering the 2006 NPC USAs so it was good to hang out in a different context.
Since the British pound is so strong, it made sense for him to purchase a powerbook in the states (which he's shown using here).

The other side of the lens

So this last weekend at the USAs it seemed like people were taking pix with me in them a lot. I take so many shots of people that I am happy to oblige the requests, and of course most being with some great looking women makes it that much easier. This one is with Canadian professional salsa dancer Nancy Di Nino.

City of Brotherly Love...

So here I am in the City of Brotherly love and I thought this image from a shoot I had today illustrates my take on it. We shot down in a neighborhood called Manayunk where Courtney, the model, used to live. It had a nice feel to it and I learned it's home to the first canal begun in the US.

On Tuesday I awoke to the booming thuds of construction work which it turns out was the crack house across the street getting razed. I decided to set up a camera to put together a time lapse animation but the files are too big so I'll have to figure that out another time. Here's a final shot of the space from yesterday...

Mmm...
Oh man, I've always loved cream puffs, but really it was just the ones my mom used to make that I loved best.
Recently a cream puff shop opened up and I saw a huge ass line there and haven't been back since to try it out. In the paper today they had a whole article about it - turns out it's a Japanese chain so I'm even more intririgued - looks like it's time for some Yelp homework!

The thrill of victory

Here's Lacey enjoying her victory over Hailey Hatred at ChickFIght 4 that happened at Kezar Pavilion today. These girls were pretty good and intense for the most part. I definitely would recommend checking out a wrestling event. It's definitely a lot of high energy and intensity and the crowds are great. Tonight is the men's championships as well as a three way grudge match between a few of this afternoon's ladies.

Pocky

Pocky has to be one of my favorite candies (not even sure if that's what category it goes in). I'm not sure how popular in Japan where it's from, but based on all the permutations they keep putting out, it must be popular enough.
My sister took a quiz on what type of pocky you are and we are both chocolate. I was hoping for Men's Pocky but alas...

Directions?

This semi truck was stopped in the middle of the street and at first glance it looked kinda odd since if it was stopped it would most likely be over to one side or the other, not in the middle. Later I saw that the driver appeared to be asking directions from the women on the sidewalk but we couldn't hear the conversation b/c it was raining.

Colette Nelson outside my house

I walked out of my flat last night and found two huge wild postings of Colette Nelson outside. There's a series of six panels (2 of her, 2 each of 2 other models) for the campaign which has television components as well with Colette and Jitka Harazimova.
It's kinda weird to see something like that with someone you know - pretty cool!

New faces at the Arnold

It's always surprising how small a world it is in the fitness and bodybuilding industry. Every year at the Arnold, one of my favorite assignments is to find new faces to set up shoots with.
This year I met Tonya (left) and Dana perusing the expo and shot with them during the weekend. It turns out they know Becca Swanson, Ali Huston and Deb Widdis whom I had shot in Chicago at Jr Nationals a few years ago. Tonya is actually going to be joining the Big Arm Gym and looks like she's got a good start already.

The more you look...

It's weird how the more you look at things, how they seem to change and what first appealed to you becomes less interesting and how things that were at first less interesting become more so.
It's kind of like the hooky songs that you first like on an album and how the longer you own the CD you start liking other songs more. I guess it's the whole acquired taste type of thing.
Anyhow, from the wedding this past weekend, this image has really got my attention. I think it's because it's more abstract that I like it since you see so many 'traditional' and 'nice' shots, so anything different and unusual has more appeal...
Perfect Kiss / New Order / lyrics
I stood there beside myself,
Thinking hard about the weather
Then came by a friend of mine
Suggested we go out together
Then I knew it from the start:
This friend of mine would fall apart
Pretending not to see his guilt,
I said "let's go out and have some fun"
I know, you know, you believe in a land of love
I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
I have always thought about
Staying here and going out
Tonight I should have stayed at home,
Playing with my pleasure zone
He has always been so strange,
I'd often thought he was deranged
Pretending not to see his gun,
I said "let's go out and have some fun"
I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
When you are alone at night
You search yourself for all the things
That you believe are right
If you give it all away
You throw away your only chance to be here today
Then a fight breaks out on your street
You lose another broken heart in a land of meat
My friend, he took his final breath
Now I know the perfect kiss is the kiss of death

My friend Julie wanted to check out HARD-Fi at Popscene tonight and since I was shooting at the SFMOMA earlier, I decided it's be a good nightcap to that.
Since I had my gear with me I saw a few other photogs shooting and decided to whip out the gear towards the end of the set. Not sure what this guy's name is but he had some pretty intense eyes.

Awards and the society crowd
This lil crab guy was either an edible portion of the sushi stand or decorative in nature. My sister and I both like these crunchy crabs, but someone else tought it wasn't quite edible so I didn't want to risk it that night.
This was from the 2005 California Home and Design magazine awards party, and there were a lot of the usual society crowd on hand, and I found out that night that I was in the current issue of 7x7 Magazine (see p.73) with my friend Sarah Berger. Our ad for weddings for Orange is also in that same issue on pg. 135 - check it out!

My pink single speed

So over the last couple years I've gotten obsessed with single speed bikes since I have been seeing them all over town for years. Some folks I know ride fixed gears too but I'm not really ready to make that jump from riding mountain bikes for the last ten years.
Anyhow, my neighbor Jessie built this bike for me and I am totally digging cruising around town on it. It was my Christmas gift to myself this year and one of the few things I've bought that isn't camera gear that cost over $100.

Strong Suits

Well, part of Landmark that was pretty cool for me was figuring out your strong suits and how they came to be. I found out that for me, many of my current behaviors were molded from an early age. Without further ado...
- Being organized - this may have started from when I was like 2-6 yrs old (in their age categories) and my Dad was yelling at my mom going off on her since we were lost in Chicago and she had the map. I remember feeling powerless and that's when I knew I had to have everything like directions/answers etc all the time so that wouldn't happen - it's kinda funny b/c Vann's comment on me on Friendster was: "if you're ever high and meet this guy in the middle of the desert, he'll have what you need. this isn't as unlikely as you think."
- Independent/Elusive - not sure if this is exactly a strong suit, but it is something I fall back on. This was in the 7-14 yrs old age range and I think I became that way when I was in grade school and I would get overlooked during recess when the team captains would pick their kickball teams. I even was picked after girls, which at that time was quite the slam so I became more introspective and elusive. I think that may also be why I like athletic girls since they were prized more than me - and I know I was actually pretty good at kickball!
- Quirky/Different - this was from the 18-25 age group that they said you was when you realized you were on your own. Not quite sure on this one but I think it may have been when I first got into my first class at UT where it was a lecture class that had two profs and was divided into two halves b/c it was so huge and your SSN was your ID. It had over 300 people and I was just another number, so I think that's when I really started to try being different. Now of course I do the hair thing, etc.

So in Spain, I really only had one day to chill and one of the athletes from the competition, Jayne Pickering from Australia hung out on the beach with myself and our mutual friend John Plummer.
Of course we had to take one pic and I was forced to flex my measly bicep... that and my miserable non-tan make me look pretty sad...

Heidrun Sigurdardottir

Just got back to the states and I started noticing my own "american" accent after being around only one other American and lots of folks who spoke english with varying accents. It was weird b/c I actually became conscious of my accent and it sounded weird when I heard it on a video clip.
It was a cool trip overall but a bit tiring - it's always nice to see familiar faces though such as Heidrun and many others. I'm already looking forward to next year's show and want to pick up a little bit of some other languages to help the communications flow.

Big People

This shot came about when Quincy Taylor (left) was hanging out at the pool waiting for someone else after competing at the Europa Super Show (where he qualified for the O) and he was checking out Jody May who I was shooting with.
Quincy is one of the biggest male bodybuilders around and Jody is a National level heavyweight and good friend so it was nice to grab them together.
One bender in Seattle after the Emerald Cup, Steve Saylor and I ended up dropping Quincy off at the airport after everyone else was too cracked out to do so (and we were pretty damn cracked out ourselves).
